Tooele Army Depot stores, issues, and renovates conventional munitions. Tooele Army Depot provides support to the Deseret Chemical Depot as well as serving as the National Inventory Control Point for ammunition peculiar equipment. Toole Army Depot is located in Tooele County, Utah, and the workforce is comprised primarily of civilians. Sierra Army Depot recently transferred the ammunition storage function to Tooele Army Depot as part of the Base Realignment and Closure initiative of 2005. There is no on-post housing at Tooele Army Depot, but available properties can be found in nearby communities. Temporary lodging is provided by the Kirk Hotel which is an extended stay hotel located about 3 miles from Tooele Army Depot. The suites have full kitchens, and reservations can be made by calling 435-882-1372. The hotel is pet-friendly and allows up to medium-sized dogs but no puppies. Another option for temporary lodging is the Sunset Inn which can be reached at 435-833-2056, and military discounts are available. The nearest airport to the Tooele Army Depot is the Salt Lake City International Airport.
Back in 2010, Tooele Army Depot gained notoriety by becoming the first Army base to install a wind turbine to generate energy. The 262-foot-tall wind turbine generates over 1.5 megawatts of energy per year which saves several hundreds of thousands in energy costs. The wind turbine is the first step in the Army’s effort to find renewable energy solutions and to continue to “go green” in the future. A recent 10-year lawsuit was finally settled between Tooele and Grantsville over Tooele’s development of the Utah Industrial Depot, an area that was once part of the Tooele Army Depot. Both sides came to an agreement, and Grantsville will get a new library while Tooele will have the lawsuit dropped as part of the settlement. The feud had erupted over perceived misuse of land that Tooele Army Depot had control over at one point. Both sides were glad to see the disagreement come to an end.
